Applications

The Alfa Laval MAB-104 is a purifier type disc-stack centrifuge. It is designed to separate water (moisture) and fine sediment from mineral oil and lubricating oil. It is primarily used for purifying fuels such as diesel, kerosene, etc. The MAB-104 is also used for separating water and fine sediment from lubrication oil, hydraulic oil, and other mineral oil.

For offshore applications, the centrifuge is configured similar to the OCM-104-Ex configuration with explosion-proof ATEX Zone II.

Modifications

The MAB 104 centrifuge needs modifications for specific applications such as hazardous area installation, processing of water-based fluids, oil, or fuel. The following is a list of common modifications by Dolphin Centrifuge based on the specific application.

Centrifuge Modification Application / Purpose
Direct Drive (Replace Friction Clutch) Explosion Proof Configuration
Non-Sparking Friction Blocks Explosion Proof Configuration
Pump Reconfiguration (Capacity) Lube Oil to Light Fuel OR Light Fuel to Lube Oil
Seals Elastomer (Viton / EPDM) Biodiesel, Hemp Ethanol, Corrosive Chemicals, etc.
Gear Pump Replacement Water Based Fluids (Steel Gear Pump not Suitable)
Operating Frequency Conversion Adapt to Operating Voltage Frequency (50 or 60 Hz)
Special Motor Adaptation Single Phase (110 V or 220 V) Voltage Application
Bowl Parts Material Upgrade Convert Bowl Parts to Stainless Steel (Aqueous Ammonia)
Purifier to Clarifier Convert from 3-Phase to 2-Phase Mode (Clarifier)

Operation

The process oil is fed to the rotating centrifuge bowl from the top (1) and is sped-up in the distributor (2). It then enters the disc stack (3), and it is between the discs that the separation occurs.

The high centrifugal force pushes the water and heavy solids to the bowl wall. The solids accumulate here, and the water travels over the top disc (4) and exits the bowl through the open outlet (5).

The oil (light phase) is moved towards the bowl center and exits the bowl through the open outlet (6).

The centrifuge needs to be periodically stopped for manual removal of separated solids.

The rotating bowl assembly is mounted on a vertical 'bowl-spindle' (7). A horizontally mounted motor rotates the spindle via a worm-gear.
